EcoSecurities is working with The Economist to ensure The Corporate Citizenship 2010 Conference, to be held in New York on March 15th-16th 2010, is carbon neutral. EcoSecurities has helped The Economist in assessing the carbon footprint for the emissions related to the conference and sourcing Verified Emission Reductions (“VERs” or carbon credits) from Irani, a wastewater methane avoidance project located in Brazil, for the emissions that could not be otherwise avoided.

Partnership project
The Irani wastewater methane avoidance project is located in the Campina da Alegria district, Vargem Bonita city, Santa Caterina state in Brazil.
The project activity avoids the release of methane emissions from the current wastewater treatment at the Cellulose Irani Paper and Pulp manufacturing company by installing a new wastewater treatment system. This new system involves aerobic treatment, which is also referred to as secondary or biological treatment. It also uses highly aerated activated sludge which can then be decanted and reused.
The Irani wastewater methane avoidance project has been verified to the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 58,000 tonnes a year.
This project has a number of environmental benefits the most important of which is that the treated wastewater can be directed into nearby rivers without damaging the local environment as any harmful organic material would have been removed by the new wastewater treatment system. In addition, the project’s sustainable development benefits include:
• Increased employment opportunities within the local area as the new facilities will need to be operated
• The use of clean and efficient technologies
• Water conservation
• Optimises the use of natural resources such as water
