The purpose of the Amatitlan project is to utilize geological resources that exist in the Amatitlan geothermal field. This has been achieved through the implementation of a state-of-the-art geothermal power plant to generate renewable electricity that can we dispatched to the Guatemalan grid. The plant uses three turbines to generate 162,000 MWh of power annually and as a result reduces greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 82,00 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year. The project was registered with the CDM EB in December 2008.
