The Araucaria Program

In 2021, ecosecurities and Hartree launched the Araucaria Program to work with local farmers, landowners, associations, co-operatives, and NGOs in the Cono-Sur region of Latin America. This project helps design, finance, and develop nature-based carbon reduction and removal projects in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, and will be generating over 10 million tonnes of voluntary carbon credits each year.

By working alongside people who own, farm, and support work on the land, the Araucaria Program aims to reverse ecosystems loss and land degradation by promoting the conservation and restoration of forests and implementing sustainable agricultural practices. Araucaria will bring significant investment and expertise to farmers, agricultural producers, and landowners by supporting their efforts to restore habitats and ecosystems.

The portfolio aims to achieve certification under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and receive Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) status.

Hartree Partners, a leading global energy and commodities trading company will invest, develop, manage, and market the projects, to help meet the surging demand for high quality Verified Emissions Reductions as businesses look to play their part in addressing the climate emergency.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a Head of Business Development to lead ecosecurities’ commercial team in the Cono-Sur region (Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay) of Latin America. The successful candidate will work with our Cono-Sur and international teams to help us expand our carbon origination portfolio under international voluntary standards (eg, Verra, Gold Standard). This is a hybrid role with two days a week in the office located in Buenos Aires and 3 days working from home.

Our portfolio includes primarily Nature-based Solutions projects, such as regenerative cattle raising, reforestation, REDD+ and soil carbon fixation. The role will require a breadth of multidisciplinary skill sets across team leadership, business management, business development, sales, finance, science, markets and technology. It will focus on building relations with local stakeholders to identify opportunities to originate NBS initiatives, as well as emissions reduction projects.

KEY RESPONSABILITIES:

  • Identify attractive commercial opportunities for ecosecurities origination pipeline.

  • Negotiate and execute contracts (termsheets, MOUs, purchase contracts) with project owners and project partners for the implementation of carbon projects.

  • Develop, motivate and lead a capable sourcing team to support growing sourcing activities in Cono-Sur.

  • Build and nurture strategic working relationships with project owners, such as pastoral/herd companies, landholders, as well as aggregators and membership organisations to develop or manage carbon projects, including on land managed by traditional owners.

  • Build business development strategies for the Cono-Sur commercial team with regards to enhance ecosecurities portfolio of carbon projects throughout Cono-Sur

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • University degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Forestry, Agriculture, Environmental Sustainability.

  • Fluent English, speaking and writing.

  • Acute commercial mindset and proven track record of successful sales and business development with a results-focused approach.

  • Strong quantitative abilities with ability to identify and close attractive commercial opportunities.

  • Experienced people-manager who is effective at motivating, directing, supporting and managing a small team of dedicated professionals.

  • Minimum 10-15 years of work experience in sales, business development, origination, ideally in carbon markets (but not required).

  • Experience working with a broad range of stakeholders including government and landowners.

  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team, as well as independently, with colleagues based in different locations and time zones around the globe.

  • Result-oriented work approach with the ability to work quickly from concept creation to the implementation of successful projects.

  • Eagerness to grow and learn in an evolving environment.

  • Optimistic, mission-driven personality with a can-do spirit.

  • Broad understanding of global sustainability issue.

  • Proficiency with MS office, particularly with MS Excel and complex financial modelling.

  • Adaptability and versatility.

Desirable:

  • Masters Degree.

  • Outstanding project and time management skills.

  • Knowledge of, and experience with, emission reduction project-based carbon standards, technologies and project development processes.

  • Knowledge and experience working with Agriculture, Forestry and other Land Use (AFOLU) projects.
